Doctorate Thesis
1st October 1996 – 30th April 1999 United Leeds Teaching Hospitals.
Degree of Doctor of Medicine (D.M.) awarded
Funded by the Imperial Cancer Research Fund and the Medical Research Council.
I was responsible for the Leeds FlexiScope trial, which is part of a multi-centre national trial looking at the efficacy and feasibility of population screening for colonic adenomas using a once-only flexible sigmoidoscopy. The aim of the trial was to screen 40,000 people nationwide aged between 55 and 64 of which I screened approximately 3,000 people from the Leeds area. As such, I became proficient in the techniques for polypectomy including endoscopic mucosal resection.
In addition, I investigated the influence of metabolic gene polymorphisms and diet on the prevalence of colonic adenomas of the left colon. This is the basis for the thesis entitled The effect of diet and gene polymorphisms in metabolic enzymes in the aetiology of adenomatous polyps of the left colon that was submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Medicine (D.M.) and awarded in July 2004.
